Appraisals are also valuable as a way to monitor and properly illustrate the changes in value of your collection over time.  This can be important when it comes to taxes or a loan, or when deciding if it might be time to sell some of your items.  Keeping an eye on the current market values of your works can help you know where the markets are moving, and allow you to take advantage of those changes.  During my time in the auction world I have seen many people holding on to items that at one time had some value, but which have fallen out of favor for one reason or another.  When they finally decided it was time to sell, the market values had fallen so low that sometimes they ended up with almost nothing at the end.  It is important to know which items to hold and which to sell, and when.
